Chimney Fire season is officially upon us! Tonight, Company 4 and 1 responded to a Snake Den Rd address for a reported Chimney Fire. Upon arrival, Chief 4 located an active fire showing from the chimney with a smoke condition inside the residence. Due to the difficult access to the residence, Engine 4 was the only apparatus able to gain access and Stonetown FD’s mini pumper was requested to the scene. Members from Company 4, Company 1 and Stonetown FD operated on scene for approximately 1 hour before clearing the scene. No injuries were reported. Thank you to Ringwood FD (Stonetown) for your response and WMFAS.
The community is reminded to make sure you have your chimneys and fireplaces services/cleaned each year before use. Also be sure to have your address numeric clearly displayed to ensure quick and efficient response to your home if needed!!
On June 17,2023 members of company 1 had the honor and privilege to take part in a very special event for a young boy in Dumont NJ. 11 year old Ryu Okumura is battling retinoblastoma, brain tumors, and cancer in the spine. In a few weeks ryu will be going for surgery to remove a tumor on the brain. Ryu’s dream is to become a firefighter. Today there was a small rally/parade for Ryu to lift his spirits and to make sure he keeps up the fight. fire departments, EMS agencies, police officers, motorcyclists, trucks and classic cars from all over attended todays event. Members of company 1 presented Ryu a fire helmet with a honorary firefighter shield. This brought big smiles and tears not only to him but to his family and others who were there. Ryu is now part of the firefighter brotherhood! KEEP ON FIGHTING RYU!!!

Today the West Milford Fire Department participated in the West Milford High School DWI demonstration. This demonstration happens every other year for the Junior and Senior classes that attend their respective proms events. This demonstration shows the tragic events and operations that occur during a serious motor vehicle accident resulting from a driver operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
The Fire Department, Police Department and First Aid Squad were dispatched to find a two car MVA with both driver’s entrapped in their respected vehicles. Rescue 4 and Rescue 1 arrived and began extricating the drivers. Engine 1 pulled a precautionary hand line as a safety measure for both the accident scene and landing zone. Engine 6 and Engine 5 crews set up a landing zone for Atlantic Air One to land on the High School football field.
Both drivers were extricated with one having minor injuries and the other driver was airlifted to a trauma center.
It should be noted this demonstration was just a drill and at NO TIME were there real life events that took place. Following the demonstration, a representative from AAA provided statistics from fatal accidents resulting from operating a vehicle under the influence.
On a side note, the last part of the demonstration was preformed by Oak Ridge Fabrications of the deployment of a vehicle airbag. This shows the students how fast the airbag deploys and the force it also deploys by laying it face down on the roof of the vehicle and deploying into the air.
We thank the West Milford High School for including us every year they have this demonstration and we hope the students took this demonstration seriously and learned from it.
To the West Milford Senior and Junior classes, enjoy prom and be safe!!
